Game Boy Digital Camera Photos

On Feb. 23 2002 I bought a Nintendo Game Boy camera at Funco Land for $15. My friend Ed has some Game Boy pics up here: www.sito.org/~ed/gameboy/ and I thought it looked interesting.

I read up on how to transfer the images to my PC via a Game Boy-to-parallel port cable, but I just ended up frustrated. Then Ed told me that he just scans the whole Game Boy. Ingenious.

The guy at Funco Land said that used Game Boy cameras contain hidden treasures: the photos taken by the previous owner.

I love how serious he looks as he takes this high-contrast photograph of himself in the mirror.

And then, of course, I felt obliged to photgraph myself:

Is this working?

Oh, yeah, it's working!

I am a little disappointed that the previous owner's photos turned out so much better than mine. Did I not use enough contrast? Or do I not have the tortured artist's soul that he does?

Later I bought a Gameboy Printer off of Ebay.com, thinking that I could get higher-quality images than by simply scanning the Gameboy. I'm not sure that's really the case, but I can't deny that the pocket-size label printer is a fun toy.

Martin Eyre built a Gameboy Printer Emulator, so that you can download the data to your PC exactly as it is stored in the camera. This is ideal. However, I have not yet gotten the emulator to work on my PC. I have a feeling that the reason is that I have not properly mapped the pins on the Gameboy to the pins on the serial port of my PC.

I generally have terrible luck fiddling with electrical hardware. Do not let my failure dissuade you!
