{"id":793,"date":"2012-08-02T16:38:30","date_gmt":"2012-08-02T21:38:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/osric.com\/chris\/accidental-developer\/?p=793"},"modified":"2016-06-11T13:43:37","modified_gmt":"2016-06-11T18:43:37","slug":"jaws-screen-reader-reads-hidden-span-in-internet-explorer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/osric.com\/chris\/accidental-developer\/2012\/08\/jaws-screen-reader-reads-hidden-span-in-internet-explorer\/","title":{"rendered":"JAWS Screen Reader Reads Hidden Span in Internet Explorer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>5 years ago, Juicy Studio posted in the article <a href=\"http:\/\/juicystudio.com\/article\/screen-readers-display-none.php\/\">Screen Readers and display: none<\/a> that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomscientific.com\/products\/fs\/jaws-product-page.asp\">JAWS Screen Reader<\/a> reads the content of hidden <em>span<\/em> elements on a page when used with Internet Explorer.<\/p>\n<p>Although a subsequent article (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessibleculture.org\/articles\/2011\/08\/jaws-window-eyes-and-display-none\/\">JAWS, Window-Eyes and display:none: Return to 2007<\/a>) suggests that this issue has been resolved in JAWS version 12 when used with Internet Explorer 9.<\/p>\n<p>I have not yet tested this in Internet Explorer 9, but I noted that there is still at least one issue when using JAWS 12 with Internet Explorer 8: the <em>title<\/em> attribute of a hidden <em>span<\/em> element is read aloud. For example, take the following HTML:<\/p>\n<p>&lt;p>Paragraph element. You should hear this text.&lt;\/p><br \/>\n&lt;p>Paragraph element. You should hear this text. &lt;span style=&#8221;display:none&#8221;>Hidden span element. You should not hear this text.&lt;\/span>&lt;\/p><br \/>\n&lt;p>Paragraph element. You should hear this text. &lt;span title=&#8221;Title attribute of hidden span element. You should not hear this text.&#8221; style=&#8221;display:none&#8221;>&lt;\/span>&lt;\/p><\/p>\n<p>I expected to hear exactly what is displayed on-screen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paragraph element.
